As soon as we start approaching the end of a year, we usually take some time to evaluate how the year has been, either personally and professionally. It's time for retrospection so we can start the new year with only good things in our minds.

This period is also important as it's the time that we start planning the year that is coming. We always want to achieve so many things, have so many dreams, and nothing better like a new year for a fresh start.

Many people even write down a list of all the changes they want to make in their lives in the upcoming months. Despite each one of us has their own challenges, there are some changes that are common to most of us.

One of the problems with new year's resolutions is that even though we do spend some time thinking about all those things we want to change or that we want to start or stop doing, we fail to keep them in practice.

So, here are our top 5 new year's resolutions and how you can put them into practice:

#1: Being Healthy:

This is a very general resolution and one of the most common. We just want to be healthy. Maybe this is why we tend to forget about it. So, how can you put it into practice? Simple... Instead of saying that you want to be healthy, be more specific:

- Start eating well:

This is a more focused resolution. Switching to a healthier diet will help you be healthy, and even lose some of those extra pounds. It will make you feel better about yourself because you'll not only be implementing a resolution as when you see the results, you'll feel proud of yourself in the long run.

- Getting in shape:

This is another complement to the being healthy resolution. Exercising is good for both your physical and mental health. You'll feel more energetic and it's also a great way to release all that accumulated stress. All you need to do is to find an activity that you like. With so many to choose from, you won't have any problems picking just one or two.

#2: Earn More Money:

Money is always an important part of the equation. However, just like the first resolution, it is very broad. So, instead of writing that you want to earn more money as a resolution, you can divide this into several resolutions:

- Get a promotion:

Getting a promotion isn't only a good thing because of the extra money that you'll start to earn; it's also a good thing because your work is being recognized. So, if you love your workplace and want to keep working there and earn more money, add getting a promotion to your resolution's list.

- Get a new job:

Maybe you're tired of the job you have or your boss isn't the nicest person in the world, or maybe you just got off college and you're looking to work for the first time in your life. No matter the reason, you want to get a new job and this is a great way to start earning more money. Make sure that you think about all the things you know and can do and start applying.

- Go back to school to get more qualifications:

Some people never got the chance to finish high school or you just want to take a degree. Maybe this was your dream when you were younger and you never got the chance. For others, getting more qualifications means they will be able to start earning more on their current job. Despite the reasons, they are all valid. Knowledge is power and if this is your dream, make sure to pursue it this year.

- Find a hobby that you like and turn it into a business:

If you have an entrepreneur inside of you, then this is a great resolution for the new year.

#3: Balance Your Time:

Despite we all want to make more money and we want to be successful professionally, we just need to have a balance in our lives. So, having enough time to spend with your family and your friends should definitely be a priority. Besides, meeting new people is always challenging and wonderful. Being open to different points of view, to different activities, is always a good way to start a nice friendship that can last for years.

Taking some time to dedicate to yourself is always good. Try to appreciate the little joys that life provides you instead of dwelling on the negative aspects that are sometimes part of life.

Why not turn the TV off and call a friend instead, or contact a loved one from whom you haven't heard in more than a year?

And lastly, if you haven't found your soul mate yet, why not decide that this is the year. Embrace it. Fight for it. The right person for you is just around the corner. Just give yourself a chance by balancing your life and it will be easier to find him/her.

#4: Stop Bad Habits:

No matter whether you love to smoke or to drink gallons of coffee every single day, it's time to stop these nasty habits that are making you unhealthy. Yes, it's hard and it's not easy. However, can you imagine how much money you'll save if you quit bad habits? How about drastically improving your health?

Make a commitment to yourself and let this year be a fresh start for you. If you think you don't have enough strength, look for a friend who can motivate you and be a part of your journey. He will help you and you will both celebrate when you finally overcome these habits. Look up to those who are where you want to be, and be inspired by their actions and success.

#5: Reduce Stress:

Stress is a part of our lives. We just keep rushing from one place to the other. Sometimes, you don't even have time to think. However, now you do. You are thinking about your new year resolutions and this is the best time to deal with the things that are bad for you and find a way to make them better.

There are multiple things that you can do to reduce stress:

-  Get enough sleep:

Most of us don't even sleep 6 hours a night. So, we just can't expect to be in our best shape. And when this happens, stress can be overwhelming.

- Read a good book:

Nothing better to calm you down than to read a good book and take the time to do something that you just love. You'll feel less anxious.

- Meditate or practice yoga:

Most people are aware that relaxing your mind will help you release all the stress that you have accumulated.

- Work out:

Exercise, whether at the gym or at home,  will help you deal and manage stress. It's a great way to release all your frustrations after a day that didn't go as expected. Besides, it's great for your health.
